Term 1 is a great time to start strong and set up for a successful year of PBIS implementation.
Use the checklist below to identify tasks to add to your PBIS action plan. Your annual action plan will guide your PBIS implementation throughout the year. Use Term 1 leadership team meetings to select up to 3 action plan priorities for the year. Priorities will be determined by reviewing both outcomes and fidelity data to establish next steps. Your action plan is a working document and can be updated as the year progresses as more data is collected.
Recharge your PBIS leadership team
The start of the year is a good time to recruit new team members. Review your team structures to ensure your team is still representative and has established operating procedures. Are roles and responsibilities documented (hot tip – always have a backup for the key roles of team leader, secretary, and data manager)? Do you have agreed team norms? Are meetings scheduled for the rest of the year? Do you always work from an agenda and document tasks, timelines and responsibilities for follow up?
Use your data for early intervention
Recent research indicates that 50% of students that have received 2 or more office discipline referrals (ODR) for behaviour by the second month of Term 1 will have more than 6 ODR by the end of the year. Teams can therefore use behaviour referral data to identify students requiring targeted intervention before a pattern of unwanted behaviour develops.
Schedule your annual fidelity surveys
Fidelity surveys such as the TFI and SAS help teams to assess how well implementation is going and identify areas for celebration or improvement. It’s important to schedule at least one fidelity survey annually, preferably around the same time each year. Check out PBIS Assessment for a range of fidelity surveys that can be taken online.
Revisit your consultation and communication plan
PBIS involves the entire school community and it’s important to ensure that staff, students, families, and the community have regular opportunities to contribute to PBIS implementation and provide feedback on systems and practices. There are many different ways to get input from stakeholders, including setting up working parties, running focus groups and conducting surveys. Make sure you include consultation and communication strategies in your annual action plan.
Thank you for this post. Shared responsibility through a solid team is so important. It really helps with sustainability of PBIS!
